President Trump has announced the initiative of a new agenda, Victims Of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE). President Trump said that the goal of this program is to “provide a voice to those who have been ignored by our media, and silenced by our special interests”. Although his intentions may sound like President Trump wants to support victims of any and all crime, the reality can provoke dangerous outcomes.
President Trump argues that media ignores problems of immigrants participating in illegal activities. However, there is some question to the validity of his statement. Many studies prove that undocumented immigrants are less likely to commit a crime than American-born individuals. Approximately. five percent of in-state and federal prisoners are noncitizens. Instead of supporting all victims of crime, President Trump has isolated innocent immigrants.
Since President Trump’s election, the rate of crimes against immigrants and other minorities has risen dramatically. There has been a 67% increase in hate crimes against Muslims, and the rates of hate crimes against Jews, POC, and members of the LGBT+ community have also increased.
President Trump’s actions continue to foster an environment in America containing unwarranted racism, xenophobia, and islamophobia.
