White House Press Secretary, Sean Spicer, told media that Syria’s President Assad was guiltier than Adolf Hitler because he issued a chemical weapon attack which killed civilians. Mr. Spicer defended his position and argued, ” Someone as despicable as Hitler didn’t use chemical weapons”. Chemical weapons are defined by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons as “any toxic chemical or its precursor that can cause death, injury, temporary incapacitation or sensory irritation through its chemical action”. According to this definition, Hitler actually did use chemical weapons to kill Jews during the Holocaust. When this fact was addressed, Sean Spicer clarified, “He brought them into the Holocaust centers, I understand that. But (not) in the way that Bashar al-Assad used them where he went into towns, dropped them down, into the middle of towns”.  Although they differ in execution, both attacks are undoubtedly horrendous and caused damage to innocent individuals.

In my opinion, Mr. Spicer’s comments are invalid and are ultimately provoked by a lack of understanding of Syria and the history of the Holocaust.
